Producers of the 2008 International Marina & Boatyard Conference, scheduled for Jan. 19–22 in Atlanta, are urging exhibitors and attendees to reserve their rooms now to benefit from the IMBC-negotiated room rates of $199 per night.
The Association of Marina Industries and the American Boat Builders and Repairers Association — owners and operators of IMBC — say registration numbers have tripled compared to last year at this time. After Jan. 4, rooms at IMBC’s convention site and hotel, the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, go back to the Marriott’s standard rates.
Visit www.marinaassociation.org/imbc and click on “hotel registration;” the room-rate code is already embedded in the link.
The IMBC caters specifically to marina owners, managers and staff, as well as boat repairers and yards. In addition to product exhibits on the show floor, the event includes seminars, roundtable discussions and talks ranging in topics from the future of marina villages to the ins and outs of hurricane preparedness.
For more information, a tentative agenda, and to register for the conference, call (401) 252–9544, or visit www.marinaassociation.org/imbc.

Marine NewsWire of Norfolk, Va., appointed James Nolan Associates in Seattle as sales representative for the European boating sector.
“We see a tremendous potential for Marine NewsWire among European boatbuilders and accessory manufacturers who wish to promote their products and services into the Americas but are unfamiliar with the media in those markets,” James Nolan said in a statement. “With Marine NewsWire, we can make sure their news releases reach all the journalists and editors covering their target markets.”
Marine NewsWire was founded in 2001 by Rhodes Communications, an international public relations and marketing firm based in the United States, to distribute press releases to marine media outlets worldwide. The company serves commercial maritime and recreational boating markets.
“Our expanded database features more than 1,500 contacts in 48 countries, including print, broadcast and electronic media,” said Jim Rhodes, president of Rhodes Communications.

David Veech of the Institute for Lean Systems will lead onsite networking sessions to kick off and close this year’s Conference on Marine Industry Technical Training.
The format of these self-organizing forums is designed to encourage interaction among attendees and presenters. The forums offer participants an opportunity to talk about concerns that aren’t on the formal agenda, projects that they want to showcase, and specific products for training and workforce development.
Veech is the executive director of the Institute for Lean Systems, where he develops and teaches certification courses, executive courses and short courses on topics related to problem solving, motivation, employee involvement and satisfaction, team building and leadership. He also provides executive coaching for ILS clients.
“We are delighted to have David Veech conducting this session for us,” said Barbara Jean Walsh, chair of the COMITT planning committee, in a statement. “It is a very dynamic type of activity – quite different from a keynote address – and we believe this will help attendees make immediate connections with the right people, projects, vendors and tools.”
COMITT 2008 is scheduled for Feb. 18-20 in Fort Lauderdale.

Red Rose Equity Partners LLC, a private equity firm established to develop emerging technologies, acquired Boat Bunkers International of Cape Coral, Fla.
Boat Bunkers produces an in-water mooring station designed to keep boat hulls clean and eliminate the need for antifouling paints.
“We visualize a revolution in the marine industry relative to the control of biofouling,” said Mark Kempster, a principal in Red Rose Equity Partners, in a statement. “Biofouling has been, and remains, a huge problem worldwide and the current solutions to control it are environmentally damaging. In particular, the use of toxic antifouling paints has come under close environmental scrutiny and many such coatings have already been banned in many parts of the world.”
“Boat Bunkers offers a simple but highly effective solution to control biofouling without the use of any toxic components,” said Jim Vitale, another principle with Red Rose, in a statement. “We see this as a very important step forward in addressing a very significant issue confronting the marine industry.”
Boat Bunkers offers mooring stations in a range of sizes for boats from 12 to 50 feet. The mooring stations create an isolation chamber that the boat floats in. The isolation prevents oxygen flow and food sources, which in turn prevents growth of barnacles and other marine life, according to the company.
The company will continue to operate as Boat Bunkers International with the same personnel, according to Red Rose Equity Partners.

Also, free customer education and staff training materials will be provided at the workshops, including posters, oil-sorb kits and a training video.
Dates and locations are as follows:

The Maryland Clean Marina Initiative was established in 1998 with the help of the MTAM as an alternative to further regulations on the marina industry. The initiative aims to reduce non-point source pollution by certifying at least 25 percent of the estimated 600 marinas in Maryland. Today, 124 marinas (about 20 percent) are certified as either Clean Marinas or Clean Marina Partners (smaller marinas with fewer services).
